Reading by translator Mira Rosenthal

This world, along with several other worlds,
can fit into the outside pocket of my backpack
or in a bag from Switzerland procured
in a shop with a view over the roof, the lake,

the Alps, eternity, the teeth of the hungry maw
still open. Watch me now, how I’m dancing around
with a bottle on my head and glasses in my paws.
No matter the size of my steps, I’ll arrive too soon.

With time, I’ll lose as much as the distance I cover,
to die in combat, what an honor. Sorry for the casualties.
I tried to carry it with care, to see what I could save,
got drunk so as not to spill a drop. My right leg’s tricky.

This world, along with other worlds in the set,
this worm food falling from my outside pocket,
crow food, mold food, spilling out with coins
for buying wine and seashells found in Spain.

PLECAK

https://legacy.zocalopublicsquare.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Plecak-Polish_Final.wav

Reading by Tomasz Różycki

Ten świat, a także kilka innych światów
zmieści mi się w bocznej kieszeni plecaka,
albo w szwajcarskiej torbie, kupionej
w sklepie z widokiem na dach, nieskończoność,

jezioro, Alpy, zęby głodnej paszczy
jeszcze otwartej. Patrz teraz jak tańczę
z butelką na głowie, trzymając w rękach kieliszki.
Ile bym kroków nie mierzył, zawsze przyjdę za szybko.

Ile pokonam przestrzeni, tyle sam przegram z czasem,
zginąć w walce to zaszczyt. Za ofiary przepraszam.
Niosłem ostrożnie, żeby ocalić po drodze.
Upiłem, by nie uronić. Mam krótszą prawą nogę.

Ten świat, a także parę innych światów,
wysypaną z kieszeni karmę dla robaków,
dla gawronów i pleśni, razem z monetami,
za które kupisz wino i muszle z Hiszpanii.
